If you've ever tried to give a cat a pill, you know it can feel like a two-person job — even for a small animal. Liquid medications are often easier, but they still require some technique.
The Burrito Method
Wrap your cat snugly in a towel with only their head exposed. This limits their ability to scratch or squirm. Keep the environment calm and quiet — avoid approaching an already-stressed cat.
Positioning
Hold the syringe in your dominant hand. With your other hand, gently tilt the cat's chin upward at a slight angle (not fully vertical). Aim for the side of the mouth, between the cheek and the back molars.
Administer Slowly
Squirt a small amount at a time, allowing your cat to swallow between doses. Rushing is the most common mistake — it causes gagging or the cat spitting out the medication.
The Transdermal Alternative
If oral medication is consistently failing, ask your vet or pharmacist about transdermal gel formulations. These are compounded medications applied to the inner surface of the ear flap (the pinna). The medication absorbs through the skin — no swallowing required.
Not all medications can be compounded into transdermal form, but many commonly prescribed feline drugs can be, including methimazole (for hyperthyroidism) and some anti-anxiety medications.
Flavoring Helps
